Evapeos sample concentration system for the isolation of thermolabile biomolecules from water Evapeos sample concentration system for the isolation of thermolabile biomolecules from water

Key Features

  • Ideal system for thermo-labile molecules as concentration occurs at temperatures between ambient and 40°C.
  • No vacuum required
  • Rapid water removal from samples at rates up to 1 L per hour
  • Samples up to 1 L can be concentrated
  • Wide range of FDA-approved cartridge sizes available for different sample sizes
  • Easily interchangeable cartridges can be used for different products in order to avoid cross-contamination

Current evaporation techniques are often not suitable for thermo-labile molecules such as proteins because of the high operating temperatures that are traditionally employed. Discovery is pleased to announce the introduction of the Evapeos from Ederna of France that promises to provide a more rapid, low temperature, low pressure solution for the removal of water from samples containing thermo-sensitive compounds. Key applications for the Evapeos are active pharmaceutical ingredient and natural product concentration.

The Evapeos utilizes a process called osmotic distillation to rapidly remove water from critical samples. This process involves the transfer of water (as a vapour) from a diluted aqueous medium toward an aqueous osmotic agent. These two miscible fluids are separated by a gas permeable, hydrophobic hollow fibre with high porosity. The difference in water activities between the two compartments leads to a high water vapour flux even at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure.

Evapeos evaporators are controlled through intuitive colour touch screens and use cartridges that contain thousands of hollow fibres to generate high water fluxes of up to 1 L per hour at 40°C. The unit does not require a vacuum and a range of different-sized FDA-approved cartridges are available to allow samples to be concentrated down from a sample size of up to 1 L to as low as 25 mL.  Separate cartridges can be used for different products in order to avoid cross-contamination.

Accessories

EvapeosG

This highly hygroscopic liquid osmotic agent is used in the Evapeos to absorb water from the sample being  concentrated. EvapeosG is a patent pending food-grade product manufactured by Ederna for optimal performance of  the Evapeos. It can be disposed of after use or reused after being regenerated.  This product is available in 5 L cans.

Cartridges

The Evapeos uses cartridges that contain several thousand gas permeable hollow fibers in order to generate high water fluxes out of a sample. The cartridges are easily exchangeable so that they can be dedicated to a product or a batch in order to prevent cross-contamination. These cartridges are FDA-approved and several sizes are available depending upon the volume of sample to be concentrated.

Sensors

Once connected to the Evapeos these disposable sensors provide continuous monitoring of sample temperature and pressure.

Tubing

The tubing used in the Evapeos is made of  superior flex memory platinum-cured silicon that doubles the accuracy of dispensed volumes when compared to standard platinum-cured silicon tubing. The tubing is fully post-cured and developed for biopharmaceutical applications. The ultra-smooth bore quality of the tubing helps to minimize protein binding and ensure high purity levels in the finished product.  The tubing is easily exchanged and meets FDA requirements.

Thermostats

These thermostats allow the temperature of the sample to be precisely controlled during concentration.

Evaporex 96 solvent evaporation system Evaporex 96 solvent evaporation system

The Evaporex 96 has two needle assemblies, each consisting of 96 individual stainless steel needles, that evenly distribute heated gas into a microplate from both the top and bottom. The upper gas flow path is sealed away from the heating elements in a stainless steel path in order to prevent sample contamination.

The lower platform can be adjusted to any height from the upper needle assembly to allow the needles to come in close proximity to, but without actually touching, the samples. This feature minimizes drying time and enables the user to develop methods utilizing a variety of plate sizes and sample volumes. Assemblies are available with Teflon-coated needles for applications using corrosive substances. The Evaporex system is suitable for use with aqueous or organic solvents (not dry or concentrated acid solutions).
